BOARD LUNCHEON
by Bill Diehl, ABC News Radio

New York Crimes parody aside, Tim Scheld, Director of news/programming at WCBS, shared some thoughts at the 5/21 Board luncheon. Based on public comments from people who run CBS, Scheld said it seems likely the radio portion will spin off into its own company. CBS people were also quoted as saying that it won't happen sooner than early next year. Tim seemed very upbeat about what is ahead. To that point he let us in on plans the station is making to celebrate the station's all-news CBS heritage as it turns 50.

Next year, WCBS, officially August of 2017, will celebrate half a century as an all-news station. Starting in January of '17, WCBS 880 will be featuring 50 stories each week. Scheld said they'll also be inviting alumni for an open house to the Hudson Street studios to tell stories about "where we came from." Scheld said Charlie Osgood, who attended the Board luncheon, will kick off the 50th Anniversary celebration in January.

The Board Meeting, with Mike Ludlum widow Melissa on hand, paid tribute to her late husband who was lauded as an inspiration through all five decades of WCBS 880 News.

And Osgood ended 'his' tribute saying before his passing Mike wanted to be remembered in song and Charlie then sang a few bars "so long it's been good to know yuh." We also got to hear a terrific audio tribute created by Wayne Cabot and some of his 880 colleagues. I expect, if it hasn't already, will show up on Don Swaim's WCBS tribute website.

Hats off to Richard Lorenzo who is now at the helm of the Board luncheons.

Besides the regulars it was great to see several people from the early days of all-news WCBS including Robert (Bob) Vaughan, 86, who now lives in Florida.

Thanks to Rhoda Aronson, Bob Gibson, Bill Diehl, & Fred Fishkin, for sending the pictures, a highly selective representation. I know some folks have been left out, for which I apologize. --DS
